At Escondido in Santa Fe, hospitality, art, and social purpose converge within a deeply immersive dining environment. Co-founded by Fernando Ruiz and Vince Kadlubek, the restaurant was conceived not only as a culinary destination and immersive environment, but as a platform for transformation, operating in part as a felon reentry initiative that provides culinary training and employment pathways for formerly incarcerated individuals.
In a space where narrative and atmosphere are central to the guest experience, the audio system was designed to function as a key architectural element, supporting the immersive character of the environment while remaining visually discreet.
The primary dining space features a multichannel audio system capable of object-based immersive playback. Rather than treating music as background alone, the system allows sound to move intentionally through the room, shaping atmosphere, guiding attention, and reinforcing the experiential quality of the space. The goal was not spectacle, but dimensionality.
The architecture itself extends the experience. Operable garage doors open to a patio, where the audio environment continues uninterrupted, maintaining tonal continuity between interior and exterior. Above, a rooftop deck incorporates a high-quality sound system integrated discreetly within planter boxes. By embedding loudspeakers within landscape elements, we preserved the design intent of the space while ensuring even, full-range coverage for private events and evening gatherings.
Flexibility was central to the concept. Dedicated AV LAN connection points throughout the venue allow visiting DJs to integrate directly into the system, transforming the restaurant from intimate dining setting to performance-driven venue. The system dynamically recognizes the connection location and automatically adjusts routing, tonal balance, and system configuration to match the room, whether interior dining, patio, or rooftop. This approach eliminates complex setup while preserving consistent audio performance. Transitions between curated ambient programming and live sets are seamless, supported by infrastructure that anticipates both modes of operation without visual disruption.
One of the most distinctive design elements is an invisible loudspeaker embedded behind a mural within the drywall. By activating the wall as a sound source, the mural becomes both visual and acoustic focal point—an intentional blending of art and technology. The system remains unseen, yet its presence is felt, reinforcing the immersive narrative of the room. We were able to integrate technology in a way that feels intrinsic to the story of the space rather than applied to it.
