Toyota Elephant Passage (TEP) is a 10-acre, LEED Platinum–certified habitat at Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance and one of the largest and most complex elephant habitats in North America. Designed primarily for Asian bull elephants—alongside Greater one-horned rhinos and Malayan tapirs—the exhibit features over two miles of interconnected trails, expansive yards, mud wallows, and more than one million gallons of water.

As the zoo’s most prominent demonstration space, TEP hosts twice-daily keeper talks that draw some of the largest crowds on campus. Our role was to elevate these presentations from straightforward amplification into more theatrical, story-driven experiences.

Working within the Q-SYS platform, we introduced one of the zoo’s first iPad-based control interfaces for non-linear audio playback and show control in a major exhibit. This allowed keepers to trigger custom music cues, sound effects, and thematic transitions dynamically—responding in real time to animal behavior and audience engagement rather than following a rigid timeline.

Because TEP’s demo is the largest and most visible at the zoo, we developed customized audio content specifically tailored to the elephant presentation. The goal was not spectacle for its own sake, but emotional reinforcement—supporting conservation messaging, highlighting animal behaviors, and helping audiences connect more deeply with the scale and presence of the animals in front of them.

In parallel, we addressed reliability challenges in the wireless microphone system. Dropouts had been occurring during high-attendance talks, compromising clarity at critical moments. We conducted a full UHF spectrum analysis of the site and tested antenna signal strength and placement throughout the demonstration area. Based on this data, we refined the antenna layout and coordination strategy to improve RF stability and ensure consistent coverage across the expansive yard.

Toyota Elephant Passage represents a shift in how the zoo approaches live interpretation: combining theatrical audio elements, intuitive show control, and technical reliability to support conservation storytelling at scale—without distracting from the animals themselves.
